Green Climate Fund brings renewable energy future to the Cook Islands

As the Cook Islands transition to a renewable energy future, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) is delivering a $12 million grant in additional financing to this ongoing Renewable Energy Sector Project.

Co-financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the European Union and the Government of the Cook Islands, the project is designed to lower reliance on fossil fuels through the construction of solar-powered plants on five of the Cook Islands’ 15 islands.

The Green Climate Fund grant will help fund the installation of three units of a battery energy storage system with a preliminary capacity of 3 megawatts (MW) and 12 MWh. The result will connect an additional 6 MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity to the grid. In addition the project aims to regenerate the existing distribution network, improve national energy security and sustainability, and support the government in the development of its energy efficiency policy implementation plan which will see the delivery of renewable energy to all islands by 2020.

ADB Pacific Department Energy Specialist Woo Yul Lee says, “The project aims to increase energy security in the Cook Islands in an environmentally sustainable manner, while increasing the share of renewable energy in the country’s energy mix without negatively affecting the grid”.
