Australia and UK Take Big Step Into Energy Future

In a bid to increase power generation from renewable energy, Australia has put up some $400m in funds for two government programs – the Industry RAR program and the Community RAR program. Regional Australia’s Renewables, as the two initiatives are collectively called, includes plans to produce 150MW of electricity from renewable energy sources. Another objective is the building of at least 2 big-scale renewable energy facilities of no less than 10MW capacity.

The project is particularly focused on locating the new developments around the region and in the less accessible parts of the continent. With the initiatives, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency hope to foster advances in renewable energy solutions for off-grid communities. In addition, the government will be looking at ways of incorporating renewable energy into the consumer electrical supply, such as through the use of energy storage systems.

Over in the United Kingdom, energy innovation has received a massive fillip – to the tune of £19 million. Specifically, the Department of Energy and Climate Change has provided the pot of money to fund fresh ideas in energy efficiency, energy storage, and low carbon generation. With the Energy Entrepreneurs Fund, promising solutions in green technology will be introduced to the market. The public and private sector are eligible for the program, which “will get ideas off the ground and into the market, create new green jobs, and help the UK get ahead in the innovation global race,” according to Energy Secretary Edward Davey.

Ultracapacitor UPS (U-UPS) for voltage dips and micro-interruptions

Power interruptions are the most frequent power supply problems with wide-ranging consequences for industry. The causes of these interruptions include short-circuits in the distribution grid, lightning strikes, the connection and disconnection of power plants as well as volatile energy producers such as wind and solar. Because technologies and production processes are becoming increasingly complex, the…

Product Development: Embracing product safety and compliance

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT: EMBRACING PRODUCT SAFETY AND COMPLIANCE Recent safety incidents on storage plants have raised concerns about the fire safety of battery storage systems. Such events are extremely rare compared to the cumulated global deployments of energy storage systems, which have reached more than 27 GWh by end of 2020 (Wood Mackenzie 2021). However, for…

Future energy predictions: Growth of flexibility and grid forming

It is well known that COVID-19 has caused low energy demand and the growth of renewable energy across Europe. Now, Andrew Tang, Vice President for Energy Storage at Wärtsilä, predicts this will result in swift action to build better grid resiliency. The share of renewable power across Europe has skyrocketed over the last six…
