Behind-The-Meter Energy Storage Could Grow Exponentially in US

Behind-the-meter (or customer-sited) energy storage deployments grew more than three times in 2014, and accounted for 10% of total 2014 deployments in US. Of this, the non-residential segment accounted for a large majority of the deployments.

However, this is expected to grow 60 fold in the next 5 years, much faster than front-of-the-meter storage. The projection stands now at 45% of the overall 2019 market.  This market is expected to grow explosively due to its ability to offer different grid services for utilities and system operators.

California has led the growth in behind-the-meter markets and Southern California Edison’s LCR procurement is the largest procurement of behind-the-meter storage for utility needs. Elsewhere in Arizona, utilities have plans to procure energy storage, coupled with solar, to facilitate more distributed energy resources on the grid.
