How Many Storage Projects Worldwide?
All told, 633 advanced energy storage projects have been or are being completed at this moment. Navigant Research has spun the globe, tallied the figures, and announced that eye-watering figure in their report Energy Storage Tracker 3Q13. During the first half of this year alone, the burgeoning field saw 38 new projects to add to a market already teeming with activities. The ultra-high speed growth of the industry is clear given the fact that there were only 562 projects running or being commissioned at the close of 2012. There is a danger for the promising figures to conceal a deeper issue, though, as the technologies implemented and the energy storage applications are equally diverse – the 633 projects together cover 865 separate systems.
Alstom is the market leader, with a 19% share of the industry, Germany comes second in the shape of Voith, while Gridflex flies the American flag in third. While the Continental companies are hogging a large share of the pie, Asia Pacific can still boast of having the highest installed capacity anywhere. Its 1.2 GW represents 47% of world capacity.
