Powin & IPC to Co-develop Grid Storage Solution
Powin Energy and Ideal Power Converters’ (IPC) have entered a joint collaboration to develop a modular grid storage solution. Powin will utilize IPC’s bi-directional battery converters as part of the Powin Energy Grid Storage Solution. Through this development alliance, Powin and IPC will jointly develop the Powin Energy Module Grid Storage solution and validate the system with independent testing labs and utilities.
Bi-directional battery converters convert Alternating Current (AC) from the power grid to Direct Current (DC) needed to charge batteries and then invert the DC current from the batteries back to the AC grid. An efficient, low cost, reliable converter is required to achieve this.
Possessing the capacity to provide four hours of cost-effective storage with Lithium Phosphate batteries, Powin’s modular grid storage solution can be employed for daily load levelling and peak demand reduction. Working in tandem with Powin’s grid storage solution, IPC’s bi-directional converters have the ability to lower the power electronics efficiency losses in grid-storage energy systems by 30 to 60 percent compared to conventional converters as well as reduce system costs. The partnership is hoped to enhance development, utility validation and eventual market adoption of grid storage solutions.
