Self Charging Battery Stores/Generates Energy

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have recently published their study on combining energy generation and storage in a single unit.

Renewable energy technologies generally consist of two distinct processes: energy generation (using sources such as coal, solar, wind, etc.) and energy storage (such as batteries). These two processes are always accomplished through two separate units, with the first process converting the original form of energy to electricity, and the second process converting electricity to chemical energy.

Now for the first time, engineers have demonstrated that energy can be generated and stored in a single device that converts mechanical energy directly to chemical energy, bypassing the intermediate step of electricity generation. The device basically acts as a hybrid generator-battery unit, or in other words, a self-charging power cell.

How to create a level playing field for storage systems

Definition of storage The general definition for storage is: Storage is the result of an action or method of storing or buffering something – and most importantly – for future use. There is a variety of Energy Storage (ES) systems. The majority of systems are so called power-in-power-out type of solutions. E.g. batteries fall into…

Will Australian research team crack the sodium-battery code?

A team of Australian researchers are aiming to crack commercial viability of sodium-ion batteries for stationary storage applications, despite the issues that have plagued the chemistry over time. The research taking place at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales, has received $2.7 million AUD (€1.73 million euro)  in funding from ARENA (Australian Renewable Energy…

Carbon Proton Battery Stores As Much Energy As Lithium Battery In Lab Tests

“Will anything match lithium-ion batteries for energy density?” is a frequently repeated question. It’s certainly not in the cards in the next few years. But the research coming out of Australia’s RIMT University in Melbourne says that one day, it’s possible – with a carbon proton battery. The research team have designed and built a…
