Self Charging Battery Stores/Generates Energy

Researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have recently published their study on combining energy generation and storage in a single unit.

Renewable energy technologies generally consist of two distinct processes: energy generation (using sources such as coal, solar, wind, etc.) and energy storage (such as batteries). These two processes are always accomplished through two separate units, with the first process converting the original form of energy to electricity, and the second process converting electricity to chemical energy.

Now for the first time, engineers have demonstrated that energy can be generated and stored in a single device that converts mechanical energy directly to chemical energy, bypassing the intermediate step of electricity generation. The device basically acts as a hybrid generator-battery unit, or in other words, a self-charging power cell.

Carbon Proton Battery Stores As Much Energy As Lithium Battery In Lab Tests

“Will anything match lithium-ion batteries for energy density?” is a frequently repeated question. It’s certainly not in the cards in the next few years. But the research coming out of Australia’s RIMT University in Melbourne says that one day, it’s possible – with a carbon proton battery. The research team have designed and built a…

Evaluating The Economics Of Gas Storage for the Grid

Evaluating The Economics Of Gas Storage For The Grid

Power-to-gas is the method of turning electricity into hydrogen gas using electrolysis. The resulting hydrogen can then be used as vehicle fuel, combined with carbon dioxide to make methane (a natural gas replacement), or injected into natural gas infrastructure as hydrogen in low concentrations. If made from surplus renewable electricity, the generated hydrogen is low-carbon…

Cutting costs for bulk ES

What technologies are being explored to cut costs for bulk energy storage?

Making energy storage cheaper is a key goal of a horde of companies. But how are they looking to store energy at much larger – gigawatt-hours, not megawatt-hours – scales? Increasing energy density or improving component manufacturing efficiency can only go so far. Nothing can yet match pumped hydropower, however the limited availability of suitable…
