Solar Energy Storage to Revolutionise the Energy Industry?
The answer is a tentative ‘possibly’. The 110MW Crescent Dunes Solar Power Plant (which is slated for completion early next year) in Nevada provides the strongest argument yet that solar power could irreversibly alter the way we think about renewable energy. The solar installation 300kms north of Sin City brings a number of unique benefits. First, its flexibility and dispatchability mean it can serve the power needs of customers as and when required. Second, and perhaps most important, is its price point – which compares favourably to energy generated from modern coal and gas facilities.
The concentrated solar power plant will feature a fully integrated energy storage system, and is seen by SolarReserve’s vice president of development, Tom Georgis, as “the winning technology [with] all the attributes you are looking for to displace conventional generation”. He goes on to add that “it is going to change the discussion in energy markets”.
