Storage Solutions Corner: BYD

With just a few weeks to the 6th Forum, we feature a new section, Storage Solutions Corner, where we ask our sponsors about their energy storage products, business expansion, and developments in the industry. Today, we are pleased to feature answers from our Associate Sponsor, BYD.

How has your Home Energy System become a reality for its intended customers? How will they be able to benefit from your products?

There are more and more rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems built in Germany, Italy and some other country, but the generation of the PV is not stable, which will influence the electricity quality of the grid, and energy storage will be an option to solve this problem. Customers mainly benefit from the system in the following aspects: as feed-in tariffs (FIT) for solar decrease and electricity prices increase, the Home Energy System will maximize  self-consumption of the solar energy, creating a totally stable and independent power supply.

Who are the intended customers of your Energy Storage Station? How is this product being made accessible to them?

The Energy Storage Station is designed for renewable power plants (wind power plant, PV plant), utilities, grid companies, and some energy organizations and companies. Each project is based on detailed research and discussions on the client’s technique and functional requirements. Apart from that, financial investment from bank or government etc. is also another important issue to make energy storage stations accessible to intended customers.

Do the various storage systems (i.e. the HES, ESS, DESS etc.) operate on the same chemical principles?

Using the same lithium iron phosphate battery, all the storage systems (HES, DESS, ESS) operates on the same chemical principles.

Is there any newer, more efficient research that could improve your products?

BYD is known as a pioneer in the electrical vehicle and energy storage area, and we continuously strive to improve our products. Our engineers and specialists carry out research in both areas, especially on the battery management system and power conversion. We also have frequent technical communication with other organizations and research institutes. Furthermore, we conduct research in a university in the northern part of China. Concerning the control system technology, BYD is working to make easier for operation and more convenient to our customers. We are also working to achieve higher efficiency and stability of our system.

How do you think the energy storage industry is evolving, especially in Asia?

One thing that we could be certain about the energy storage market is that this market has huge potential, especially in Asia and Africa. Along with the development of the economy, there will be more and more energy needed, and as we move towards reducing our carbon footprint for the environment, renewable energy will be the first option, and this will be the biggest opportunity for energy storage.

How can we develop standards for the energy storage industry?

After many years’ efforts, BYD has already built a long term relationship based on communication and cooperation with government, and is working with specialists to develop a more common standard for energy storage. At the same time, we are communicating with certification authorities and companies to work out standards/certificates for energy storage worldwide.

BYD is an Associate Sponsor for the 6th Energy Storage World Forum.
