Speakers’ Corner: BYD, Ad Huang

This week, we continue our series where we ask our speakers 6 questions on Energy Storage, and share their answers with you. Today we are pleased to feature the answers from the Business Director of BYD, Ad Huang. Enjoy!

What technical innovations in the field of energy storage have excited you the most- past and present?

In my opinion, one of the most exciting innovations in the field of energy storage certainly goes to the lithium iron phosphate battery technology. It provides not only high energy density, but also high efficiency. What’s more, this environmental friendly technology has a longer cycle life comparing to other battery technologies. On the other hand, the application in electrical vehicle is also very interesting.

When will market conditions be right for large scale deployment of energy storage?

There are still many obstacles even though the whole energy storage industry is inspired by advanced technologies, political encouragements, and more and more storage stations have been built. In the future, when there are common standards for the energy storage product, well-defined laws or regulations, proper incentives issued by the government or utility companies, and when the energy storage concept is well accepted….we could announce that the time for energy storage has come!

What is the most important function that energy storage can provide in the grid right now?

Currently, the battery storage system can provide frequency regulation, voltage support, balancing service and black start, etc, to the grid.

How essential will energy storage be in the future grid?

In the future, as more and more renewable energy could inject energy to the grid, people’s demand of energy vary according to different unpredictable conditions, the grid will take more risks. At that time, energy storage will work as an indispensable partner to the grid. It will become essential to the grid not only at the generation level but also at the distribution level.

Which topic or issue would you like the Forum delegates to really brainstorm and come up with an Action Plan that can help the industry in the future?

I would like the forum delegates to discuss on the common market standard and different requirement in different areas, as well as the technologies.

What experience does your organisation have with energy storage?

Our company started early in the battery business. From electrical vehicles and home energy storage systems to large scale energy storage systems, BYD has solutions applied in different places of the world. Based on advanced battery, we developed integrated solutions to meet different clients’ requirements. Up to now, more than 200MWh of BYD Fe battery capacity has been applied in electrical vehicles and energy storage systems around the world.

Ad Huang will be speaking at The 6th Energy Storage World Forum on the topic “Identifying Different Iron Phosphate Battery Applications By Demonstrating Different Case Studies Worldwide” on Wednesday, 24 April 2013.

If you want to know more about this and other topics directly from end users of energy storage technologies join us at one of these annual events: The Energy Storage World Forum (Grid Scale Applications), or The Residential Energy Storage Forum, or one of our Training Courses.

The UK National Energy Grid – A Story of Islands, Trading, and Energy Storage

As first seen in Energy Global, grid software acts as a modern-day map, helping to chart and navigate today’s energy grids; software engineers are tasked with carefully delineating how each region’s energy markets operate. However, looking more closely at energy markets makes clear how unique each market is – each defined by different topography, resources,…
