Third CAES Facility in the U.S. to Go Online by 2016
Apex Compressed Air Energy Storage is the energy behemoth behind what will only be the third ever CAES plant built on American soil. The company awarded a $200m contract to rotating equipment manufacturer Dresser-Rand to supply technology associated with compressed air energy storage and generation system. The complex will boast an impressive capacity of 317MW, and is seen as a vindication of Dresser-Rand’s belief that CAES has the potential to compete with other energy storage systems (batteries, molten salt, hydrogen via electrolysis, etc) both on financial and economic terms.
The Apex Bethel Energy Centre will also see the debut of Dresser-Rand’s SmartCAES technology, which will enable the plant to switch from energy storage to power-generation mode in a matter of minutes.
