Funding approved for study examining large-scale Power-to-Gas energy storage

Funding from the Energy Storage Feasibility Study Competition, launched by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), has been awarded to a new collaboration between ITM Power and Northern Gas Networks (NGN).

ITM Power, an energy storage and clean fuel company has joined forces with Northern Gas Networks to examine the potential for large-scale Power-to-Gas energy storage. Using this type of energy storage technology enables power to be absorbed when supply exceeds demand or when intermittent supply causes network stability issues.

The benefits include the fact that in Power-to-Gas, electrical power can be converted into hydrogen, which can be stored in the gas network indefinitely. As a result, the feasibility study will focus on organisations with the capacity to operate cost-effectively from 50MWh energy storage upwards. In addition, the project will also compile technical, economic and site-specific information about large-scale energy storage to aid future decision making when it comes to potential energy storage demonstration projects within this arena.

Mark Horsley, CEO of Northern Gas Networks, said: “As renewable power generation increases, effective storage and transmission of surplus power will become ever more important. Instead of being lost, this surplus power has the potential to be turned into alternative green fuels such as hydrogen, and stored in the gas network for later use in transport, heat or generation. This study will provide unique insight into how we answer some of the energy challenges we’re facing, and how by bringing gas and electricity together we can ultimately drive down costs for customers, increase resilience and improve sustainability.”
