Solar and Wind Power Storage to Total 21.8 GW by 2023
The coming decade will see record-breaking levels of instability on the central grid, as 1,300 gigawatts of wind and solar energy are expected to integrate into the grid within the next 10 years. Energy storage systems continue to be the go-to solutions for utility companies in managing this massive influx of power. Handling variable generation and balancing demand and supply will compel grid operators to turn towards energy storage systems, and Navigant Research predicts that the installed capacity for solar and wind energy storage systems will hike to 21.8 GW by 2023.
According to Anissa Dehamna, senior research analyst at Navigant, “several of the major markets for renewables, including Germany, Japan, and the United States, have enacted rules or legislation encouraging the adoption of energy storage systems for the purpose of integrating variable energy sources onto the grid.” Some of the reforms are targeted at changing the compensation for variable generation, and it is expected that these amendments will have a major influence on the market for energy storage systems for solar and wind.
