Battery Energy Storage Plant Opens in Germany – Energy Storage World Forum

German chemical manufacturer Evonik Industries and power producer STEAG have pooled their resources together in unveiling the an industrial-scale lithium electricity storage system in Völklingen. The facility has been integrated into STEAG’s existing Fenne power plant with the hope of solving the the intractable problem of grid scale energy storage and paving the way for introducing renewables into the central grid.

Completed under the auspices of the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, LESSY will have a storage capacity of about 700 kilowatt hours and an output of 1 megawatt – thanks to 4,700 lithium-ion battery cells.
