Solar & Battery Combination Could Dominate German Market
Germany, home to the world’s biggest distributed solar market, could be heading toward a large-scale adoption of energy storage for solar. Enabling this solar-backed storage are a number of factors, including steadily decreasing prices for solar panels, rising grid electricity prices, and favourable government policies. A solar trade show held in San Francisco last week featured a panel discussion about the convergence of energy storage and solar power. Intersolar CEO Markus Elsaesser thinks “battery storage and photovoltaics are a perfect fit, especially [for] residential and commercial applications”.
This prediction was also made by a group of German solar researchers and investors at the same conference. Dr. Matthias Vetter of German research giant Fraunhofer Insitute, who is scheduled to speak at the Microgrid Forum in Singapore this November, reasoned that since most solar installations in the country was off-grid, an energy storage system was essential to ensure the supply of electricity even when the sun is not shining.
