Commercial Battery Storage With Wind Farm Is Europe’s First – Energy Storage World Forum

A 2.3MW lithium-ion battery system will be deployed in combination with a 12MW wind farm on Faroe Islands, in what is a commercial first for Europe.

Saft, a designer and manufacturer of high-tech batteries, will team up with German-based wind turbine manufacturer Enercon for this energy storage system.

The ESS project, which is scheduled for appointing in December, will include two of Saft’s Intensium Max High Power containerised Li-ion battery systems. Those systems have nominal rating of 700 kWH and 2.3 MW. Enercon will contribute its 2.3MVA power conversion system and power control system.

Faore officials aim to increase the share of renewable generation from 38% in 2011 to 75% in 2020 and reduce dependence on oil.

Terji Nielsen, project manager of SEV, who produces and distributes power for the Faroe Islands called it “vital [to] maintain grid stability and reliability as the penetration of intermittent generation increases” with energy storage.
