New grid balancing energy storage in Germany: 2.5 MW completed, 10 MW contract awarded

Two new grid balancing energy storage projects in Germany: a 2.5 MW system by ADS-TEC has been completed and now connected to the grid, while a 10 MW storage contract has just been awarded to RES Group.

ADS-TEC, a provider of IT systems which now has moved into battery energy storage has completed a 2.5 MW / 2.5 MWh energy storage system in Brunsbüttel, Schleswig-Holstein. The new facility is intended to regulate the local grid network (including power supplied from a nearby wind farm), uses the company’s own StoraXe battery containers, and has one-hour duration.

Part of the funding of the new facility comes from the Federal Ministry of Economics, it will be used to research into smart-grid functionality and to compare the advantages of lithium-ion battery storage over gas. The connected grid network is operated by TenneT. ADS-TEC states that the project was completed in only eight months.

In the same Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany, Versorgungsbetriebe Bordesholm (VBB), energy supplier, held a tender for a 10 MW energy storage system in Germany, to be used for frequency stabilisation and backup power. RES Group, a UK-based developer of renewables, was awarded the contract. RES Group have completed a number of projects across North America and Europe.

RES Group intends the 10MW/15 MWh system, its first multi-megawatt storage system in the country, to be its pilot project in the local market. Schleswig-Holstein state is financially supporting the project’s construction; as the local region produces 75% of its energy from renewables grid balancing and frequency stabilising services are a key requirement. Construction on the new project is set to begin in summer 2018, with grid connection intended for spring 2019.

Research institutes will be able to use data from this energy storage project, and RES Group expect €1 m in revenue to be generated annually from supplying the local network with reserve power.
