U.S.Utility Eyes Microgrid Stake in Australia
America’s private utility NRG Energy is contemplating a move into the Australian energy market with off-grid and microgrid solutions. The installations will be outfitted with solar generation and energy storage systems. The proposed entry is part of the company’s offshore expansion plans, with Mexico and the Caribbean of particular interest as fuel costs are high in the two markets.
NRG Solar’s Todd Michaels revealed that a number of the company’s large industrial clients with sizable business in Australia are also weighing up the decision to build solar-based microgrids as a cost-reduction strategy. He goes on to that add “solar PV will be a large component of that solution”.
