HOW CAN SYSTEM OPERATORS AND TSOS OBTAIN ANCILLARY SERVICES FROM DISTRIBUTED ENERGY STORAGE AND IMPROVE GRID RESILIENCE
On the island of Ireland EirGrid & SONI, the two TSOs and Market Operators, jointly operate a Single Electricity Market across the two jurisdictions. Our challenge is to manage the introduction of renewable generation to meet a 40% renewables target by 2020. On a small system the high penetration of wind generation requires the system to be operated in new and innovative ways – calling for market participants to provide greater flexibility and introducing new tools to manage and maintain the integrity of the power system. In parallel we recognise the increase in demand and storage activity in the market and behind the meter and are introducing new system services to address some of the power system consequences.
