Singapore aims to deploy 1GWp of Solar PV generation capacity by 2020
Singapore’s Energy Market Authority has announced its plans to integrate renewable energy onto its grid through the trial usage of lithium batteries and redox flow energy storage.
With a SG$25million programme already in place to develop and test energy storage solutions, Singapore is keen to use these trials to deliver both in-front and behind-the-meter services which can enhance the stability and resilience of their power grids whilst also coping with the local weather conditions, in particular heat and humidity.
The contracts for these particular trials have been awarded to engineering company CW Group and power engineering company Red Dot Power. Both companies have head quarters in Singapore and will be operating test-beds in two sites over the course of a three-year period.
EMA CEO Mg Wai Choong says, “Insights from this test-bed would be useful for Singapore to learn how storage could enhance the stability of our grid, provide quick response capacity and improve operational flexibility. We are also exploring how to couple energy storage with solar forecasting capabilities to enable greater deployment of solar in Singapore.”
