UK energy storage given a boost with pioneering project from Bath-based renewable energy firm

A pioneering project is set to reduce the UK’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Bath-based Green Hedge, a renewable energy firm, has received investment from Zouk Capital and partnership from Alder King in preparation for an expansion in its production of battery-energy storage units.

The storage units, which produce no pollution and take up less than half an acre, work by charging from the grid and then feeding electricity back in when it is required, providing an important balancing service to the grid. This service, normally supplied by power stations or diesel generators, is set to utilise the excess energy created during periods of lesser demand, and then apply the energy back when it is most needed.

Looking to the future, the battery projects could, in future, store as much energy as that produced by 750 acres of solar panels, and the company have high hopes to develop, build and operate these storage units throughout the UK.

Green Hedge Managing Director, Niels Kroninger, says, “Energy storage is the key to a low-cost, low-carbon energy system. The investment will enable Green Hedge to build out and operate our battery energy storage projects as a first mover. This investment would not have been possible without Zouk’s energy sector expertise and entrepreneurial attitude.”
