5 Hydrogen, Fuel Cell Projects Under Way

Five research and development projects in the UK, supported by government, have been launched in a bid to accelerate the adoption of energy systems that use hydrogen and fuel cell technologies. The projects aim to incorporate the systems into everyday use, the UK Technology Strategy Board says.

1. Specialist gas company Air Products, will construct of an end-to-end, integrated, green hydrogen production, distribution and retailing system, which will be focused on a fully publicly accessible, 700-bar renewable hydrogen gas (H2) refuelling station network across London.

2. Gas supplier BOC Sureserve, will produce solar-energy-generated hydrogen through the use of an electrolyser for Swindon’s existing public access H2 refuelling station and to produce H2 for use in materials handling vehicles, as well as light utility vehicles at Honda’s manufacturing plant.

3. Hydrogen energy systems manufacturer ITM Power, will integrate an electrolyser-based refueller with renewable energy, enabling the production of zero-carbon H2 for use as a transport fuel in a range of vehicles on the Isle of Wight.

4. Facility management consultancy Rutland Management, will demonstrate a viable solar-hydrogen energy system through the full-time provision of green electricity and heat, with the benefits shared by multiple end-users of a business park in Surrey.

5. Electricity and gas company SSE, will demonstrate a renewable hydrogen system, which connects a 1 MW electrolyser to the grid, will be led by, in conjunction with an Aberdeenshire wind farm. This project will explore grid impacts and energy storage potential of hydrogen generation, as well as produce green hydrogen to power a fleet of fuel cell buses in Aberdeenshire.
