Ontario Seeks More Smart Grid Flexibility With Storage

A Toronto-based startup, Enbala Power Networks, has been expanding energy storage facilities for grid operator PJM since late 2011, helping to keep power supply fluctuations to incredibly low margins of as little as four seconds.

In addition, as the province of Ontario seeks to cut its coal programme entirely by this December, its Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) sought Enbala’s expertise in the area of storage to offset the intermittency of renewables alongside two other storage projects.

Enbala CEO Ron Dizy did not reveal how much energy his company is regulating at present, but a good gauge would be the 10 megawatts of regulation that IESO has set aside for real-time demand response.
