New Redox Flow Battery Achieves Unprecedented 25 kW Power

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT in Oberhausen, Germany, have developed a new redox flow battery that can generate stack power of 25 kW. Previous models were only able to generate a maximum power of 2.3 kW.

By rethinking the battery’s design, the scientists were able to scale the battery’s cell size to 0.5 square meters, nearly eight times larger than previous A4-sized systems.

The new prototypes also boast an 80 percent efficiency and can take loads of up to 500 amps of current.
