650 Rural Electric Utility Projects Benefit Some 8.6m Americans – Energy Storage World Forum

Since 2009, the US Department of Agriculture has funded 650 rural electric utility projects with a total of $834 million, providing electricity to 8.6 million rural American consumers every year. This excludes another $500 million spent on smart grid technology since 2011.

In a recent announcement, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said the department will be financing four more rural projects with approximately $126 million, including just over $19 million for smart grid projects.

The funding will be spent on upgrading generation and transmission facilities, distribution lines and other system improvements.
