MIT Research Team Proposes Storing Energy In Concrete
Imagine spheres of concrete carrying turbines in them, sitting neatly at the bottom of the ocean. They also act as anchors for offshore wind turbines.
That’s what the MIT research team is thinking of using to hold excess wind energy. According to their research, one such sphere could store about 6 MWh of power; 1000 of such spheres would be the equivalent of a nuclear power plant for a few hours.
The sphere stores energy by pumping seawater out of the hollow sphere, and letting the water back into the sphere to turn the turbine and generate electricity when the energy is needed.
