U.S. Army Base In Texas Installs Microgrid Facility

The U.S. Army’s base in Fort Bliss, Texas, launched its first solar and battery-powered microgrid. The system has a storage capacity of 300 kilowatts and solar capacity of 120 kilowatts.

The move not only helps the U.S. Department of Defense to meet its 25 percent renewable energy goal by 2025, but also reduces the Army’s dependence on the grid, which could increase vulnerability in an age of cyber warfare. Energy independence would mean greater military energy security.

Lockheed Martin Corp. is the defense contractor that supplied the Army’s microgrid facility.
