Battery Storage Systems Outperform Coal-Fired Plants In Stabilising Power Grid

In another argument against dirty coal, a new study by the Jülich Research Centre and battery storage expert Younicos has confirmed that high power battery storage systems are the most efficient, and most environmentally-friendly way to ensure stability and availability of power grids.

Experts conducted life cycle analysis of stationary battery storage systems and conventional power plants used to provide the grid service of primary control power. They found that the battery plants outperformed their counterparts in 11 out of 12 categories.

The results are based off the construction of a 5MW/5MWh lithium-ion battery park north of Berlin, the first commercial battery plant in Europe.

Founder of Youicos, Clemens Triebel firmly believes that stationary battery storage will lead us into a “successful global energy transition”. The time has come to retire inefficient and polluting coal-fired power plants to better stabilise the grid and in more environmentally-friendly ways.

If you want to know more about this and other topics directly from end users of energy storage technologies join us at one of these annual events: The Energy Storage World Forum (Grid Scale Applications), or The Residential Energy Storage Forum, or one of our Training Courses.
