Utility Distribution Microgrid Revenue To Total $41.6 Bn In 8 Years

Navigant Research projects that utility distribution microgrids (UDMs) would be a global market opportunity, with implementation revenue expected to hit around $40 billion from 2014 to 2023.

A growing number of utilities are beginning to see UDMS as the next logical extension of their efforts to make use of smart grid technology. This comes about with the shift in opinion about microgrids as a threat to public safety or a liability on long-term revenue projections.

Currently, UDMs make up a relatively small segment of the overall microgrid market. However, they are gaining traction in the US, Canada, Europe and Asia Pacific. Regulatory reforms in the US have been developed in response to major power outages that will help both customer-owned microgrids and UDMS progress in the next decade.

As laid out by the report, there is vast potential for investment opportunities in the regulated and unregulated business units of utilities. The report, titled Utility Distribution Microgrids, by Navigant Research, also analyses policy and technology drivers and challenges for implementation.
