Emerging Flywheel Energy Storage Technology

Amber Kinetics’ four-hour discharge duration flywheel energy storage technology (FES) was found to be financially efficient and was advised to be adopted into California’s Self Generation Incentive Program (SGIP). The study was performed by an independent engineering firm using test data from the company. The data was applied to 3 scenarios (no incentives, hypothetical permanent load shifting, and hypothetical SGIP) and demonstrated a payback between 33% and 49% in 2.09 to 3.17 years.

The flywheel energy storage technology was assessed for its load shifting abilities and auxiliary services needed for grid stabilization. The conclusion was that this innovative technology can be used not only in behind the meter applications, but also on the supply side where it canprovide the grid with more versatility and load adjustment possibilities.
