Europe’s first commercial battery storage facility with a threefold energy capacity increase

German regional clean energy utility WEMAG, owner of Europe’s first commercial battery storage plant Schwerin, has decided to enhance the plant’s power output from 5 to 10 megawatts and extend its energy capacity to 15 megawatt-hours from the previous 5 and build Schwerin 2.

Besides the plant’s main purpose to deliver primary frequency regulation services, it can balance the electricity supply generated by intermittent wind power and can help restart the grid after major disruptions. In addition, the battery park has sufficient capacity to provide black-start services and WEMAG may add even more services to raise revenues.

Younicos, a pioneer and market leader in smart energy and grid solutions, provides technical expertise – a plant control software, and is in charge of integrating additional power electronics into the system. “The fact that WEMAG is investing €5 million to increase the power and energy is a strong testament to the commercial success of battery storage,” said Alexander Schönfeldt, Younicos vice president of sales for Europe, Middle East and Africa, in last year’s statement.

We’re delivering proof that high power storage for the stabilization of the power grid is already an attractive business case“, states Thomas Pätzold, Chief Technical Officer, WEMAG AG.
