Once A Mine, Now A Waterfall For Pumped Hydro

A deserted iron mine is now about to roar with life once more.

Toronto-based Northland Power Inc. has plans to build a pumped hydro storage system using the mine pit.

Water will be pumped up a slag mountain during the night with cheap energy from Ontario’s grid, and then release the water 258 metres down to a powerhouse to generate electricity at peak-time power prices.

While Ontario expects wind-generated electricity to rise to 7,800 megawatts in 2018 from 1,700 megawatts today, the challenge is saving excess energy generated when supply exceeds demand.
