The Answer To Fluctuation: Hydrogen’s Quick Response – Energy Storage World Forum

How do we solve the problem of intermittent renewable energy sources like wind and solar? We know that energy storage is the answer, but so far, we can’t quite get the quick response that we need from storage systems when demand fluctuates.

Siemens thinks it has the answer in hydrogen.

The German engineering giant has developed an advanced proton exchange membrane (PEM) technology that is used in the electrolytic reaction, allowing the setup to respond more rapidly to energy level fluctuations.

A prototype storage facility has been able to generate some two to six kilograms of hydrogen per hour, and is rated at 0.3 megawatts at peak capacity. The facility has already commenced operation in Germany.
