Batteries, Batteries, Everywhere In The Future

Battery technology is a rapidly expanding market, with big companies and utilities investing in them lately.

In Texas, Xtreme launched a $27 million project with Samsung SDI to start a lithium-ion-based energy storage system. In the UK, S&C Electric and the Scottish and Southern Energy Power Distribution have teamed up to start a project on lithium-ion as well.

While batteries are still at the concept stage with researchers trying to bring down costs and size of the storage systems, some systems are already in the right direction. Molten batteries are high in energy density and stability, while flow batteries may be large in size but are low in cost.

Ultracapacitors are also another technology to look at, due to their ability to store larger amounts of energy. Developers are already looking at how they can deploy both batteries and ultracapacitors together for larger-scale systems.
