5MW Salem Microgrid Debuts in Oregon – Energy Storage World Forum

Up to 500 businesses and residences in southeast Salem can look forward to a more dependable and efficient supply of energy thanks to the unveiling of a 8,000-square-foot smart grid facility in Oregon. Operated by Portland General Electric, the Salem Smart Power Centre (SSPC) features a massive lithium-ion battery at the heart of its energy storage system.

The 5 MW plant received funding from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the government’s quest to look into energy storage, dispatchable standby generation, remotely operated power line switches, demand response, renewable energy integration and transactive control. As a fully operational installation, the SSPC will provide insight into how renewable energy sources and demand-response technology can work in tandem in a more efficient energy architecture.

Transactive control technology will also be integrated into the microgrid to explore the most economical way of delivering power from an integrated renewable energy storage system.
