GE’s Wind Energy Cheaper than Natural Gas or Coal

At the Windpower 2013 exhibition organised by American Wind Energy Association’s in Chicago early this year, General Electric removed the proverbial sheet to reveal its latest stab at solving the intermittency problem. The cryptically named 1.6-100 wind turbine comes equipped with a power management system and battery storage, both designed for grid-scale operation. The cost of wind energy generated by GE’s latest turbines already compares favourably to thermal coal and natural gas power generation, but the company is not about to rest on its laurels.

Using its latest 1.6-100 wind turbines, GE has plans to reduce the cost of wind energy still further, specifically by introducing “industrial Internet” features and short-term, industry-scale energy storage. A trio of innovative power control programs – Ramp Control, Predictive Power Analytics, and Frequency Regulation – will enable customers to harness wind more efficiently and improve the economics of grid-scale wind power.
