AESM – The U.S. Air Force’s Pilot Project

The U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory is making a ‘green’ move. As part of this transition, the defence laboratory will engage a computer centre in Hawaii to demonstrate an advanced system for the collection, storage and use of solar power.

Called Advanced Energy Storage and Management System (AESM), the system will be installed at the Air Force’s Maui High Performance Computing Center, which is run by the University of Hawaii. It involves installing roof mounted solar panels above a section of the centre’s parking lot, forming a solar carport. The system can also integrate wind power, grid-supplied power and power from on-site generators. If successful, the pilot project will be extended to other global defence facilities and also the civilian sector.
