Huge Batteries To Store Energy

An experiment worth £2.5m is set to get underway at Gigha, an island in Scotland. As per this, giant batteries containing 75,000 litres sulphuric acid (mixed with vanadium pentoxide) will be built. The batteries are intended to store the excess power generated by the turbines, which will be brought into use later.

At present, the surplus power produced by the turbines at Gigha is sent across to the mainland via cables. However, there is an upper limit beyond which power cannot be transmitted, as a result of which, a lot of power is wasted. The battery project will resolve this issue.
