Japanese company Develops New Flywheel System For Energy Storage

A prototype flywheel has been developed by Osaka-based company, Kubotek, intended to integrate new energy sources into local power grids.

The prototype is one of the largest flywheels in the world to make use of a carbon fiber design with a superconducting magnetic bearing that decreases the friction in the wheel.

The prototype has been installed within a 1MW power station in the Yamanashi Prefecture and will begin test operations this July to study how it can control the flow of intermittent solar power. Plans to install flywheels in train stations to harness energy of braking trains have also been proposed.

The company’s shares saw a dramatic increase by 160% this April, when they announced the completion the new prototype flywheel.
