Lithium-ion Makes Its Case With 2 Years Of Data
Chris Shelton, President of AES Energy Storage, argues that he has 2 years worth of data to prove that lithium-ion batteries are not too expensive such that they cannot be used with the grid. Instead, “the trick to making them economic is using them for what they’re good at and in this case, that’s speed.”
AES batteries provided some 400,000 MWh worth of frequency regulation services to the grid this week in the mid-Atlantic. The batteries draw their power from wind turbines in West Virginia.
According to Shelton, the AES battery configuration “consistently outperforms natural gas and coal power plants in providing the service.”
