Battery Storage To Ease Strain On Montana Wind Farms

Zinc Air Inc. has taken a big step to commercializing its battery storage technology.

By partnering with Flathead Electric Cooperative to test a 25-kilowatt battery storage system in Columbia Falls, Zinc Air Inc. will help smooth the region’s energy supply.

In Montana, hydroelectric power is abundant, while the wind industry is just starting up. When hydroelectric power supply exceeds demand, wind farms are forced to close.With the new battery system though, wind farms can store up the excess energy during peak periods. This would also help to offset the demand for hydroelectric power when excessive spillway discharges threaten the fish.

Zinc Air is preparing to expand its operations to other wind and solar installations by 2014.
