California-based Solar Company Employs 8 kWh Battery Packs – Energy Storage World Forum

We all know solar energy’s main weakness is that it is intermittent, which is why we need energy storage capabilities for it to start accounting for a larger proportion of our energy usage.

That’s why SolarCity Corp, the solar power provider, will start selling energy storage systems this year. The company has already installed 8 kWh battery packs on its own facilities.

SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive explained the move, “Storage will be crucial to balance the U.S. electric grid as solar expands… at 1 percent it still doesn’t matter. Once you get to 20 percent, it starts to matter.”

SolarCity has some 395 energy storage “pilots” to be carried out.
