California’s Green Ambitions A Boon for Storage
With its mandate for serve at least 33% of its electrical load with renewables by 2020, California recently reinforced its status as one of America’s most forward thinking state when it comes energy management. The state sees solar energy in particular as key to attaining that goal, but therein lies the problem. “We can’t just rely on sunlight,” Governor Jerry Brown explained at the Intersolar conference in July, “we’ve got to bottle the sunlight”. Governor Brown was making a grand endorsement and push for energy storage, acknowledging the critical role storage technology will play in any sustainable renewables system.
The Golden State has also walked the talk, setting a target of 1.3 GW of storage capacity by 2020. Conventional power plants could today light up more than a million homes with this amount of energy.
